Description

Here we have a top quality Pair of George V Sterling Silver Toast Racks. The racks are oblong and stand on four fan feet, with baluster handles at each end. The five square arched dividers are graduated to a peak in the middle. Each base is engraved with a crest of a lion rampant and staff on a coronet.

The toast racks were made in London by respected silversmiths D & J Welby and date to 1914. The firm dated back to the 1820s when it was a partnership of John Welby and John Clement. John Welby took sole control in 1834 and they became Daniel & John Welby in 1873. They were high end jewellers, silversmiths and later antique dealers and remained in business until the mid-1970s.

Condition is good with just signs of a small & successful repair to one handle and the overall superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each toast rack is 11.9cm / 4.7ins by 5.8cm / 2.3ins and stands 7.4cm / 2.9ins high. The pair together weigh in at a substantial 208.7g / 7.36oz / 6.71ozt of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the upper sides of the bases, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter t for 1914 and the D & J W makers' mark for D & J Welby.

Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the toast racks.
