Here we have superb George II Sterling Silver Waiter or Small Salver with an engraved central armorial. The waiter is square with re-entrant corners and stands on four hoof feet. The armorial is quite rubbed after centuries of polishing but clearly has a lion rampant on the left hand side and a tree trunk on the right hand side.

The waiter was made in London by silversmiths Joseph Allen & Mordecai Fox and dates to 1730. Joseph Allen completed his apprenticeship in 1712. In 1730 he began a partnership with Mordecai Fox and they registered their mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London. Joseph Allen died around 1746 and the business seems to have finished with his death.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after 295 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The waiter is 14.9cm / 5.86ins square and stands 2.2cm / 0.87ins high. It weighs in at a substantial 293.8g / 10.36oz / 9.45ozt of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter P for 1730 and the I A over MF makers' mark for Joseph Allen & Mordecai Fox.
