Description

This is a handsome George V Sterling Silver Decanter Label for Port. The label is in the Georgian style, octagonal shaped with line decoration around the rim and is suspended on a silver chain. The word Port is engraved in Gothic style lettering on the front.

The decanter label was made in Sheffield by renowned silversmiths William Hutton & Sons and dates to 1914. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into difficulty in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the chain and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The label is 4.3cm / 1.7ins wide and 11.2cm / 4.4ins long from the top of the chain to the bottom of the label. It weighs in at 8.7g / 0.3oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the back of the label, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter w for 1914 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd.
