Description

Here we have an elegant Art Nouveau Sterling Silver Bowl with a Gilt Interior. The circular bowl stands on a pedestal stem and the outside of the body is decorated with a continuous line of leaves and berries on a sinuous stem. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The bowl was made in London by the renowned Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co and dates to 1913. Founded in 1880 by William Gibson and John Langman, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company occupied a famous showroom at 112 Regent Street where they served a high end clientele with goods of the very finest quality. They manufactured at Clerkenwell in London and the Regent Works in Sheffield. In 1952 they amalgamated with Garrard & Co.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no significant loss to the gilding and just the minimal superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 110 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The bowl is 8.9cm / 3.5ins in diameter and stands 6.2cm / 2.4ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 85.2g / 3oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the outside of the floor of the bowl, are well struck and clesr to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter s for 1913 and the distinctive G & S Co Ltd makers' mark for The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd.
