Description

This is an attractive George V Sterling Silver Trinket Box. The box is oval with a hinged lid and a gilt interior. The top and bottom rims are beaded and the lid is decorated with engine turned stripes and a blank circular cartouche.

The box was made in Birmingham by well regarded silversmiths Nathan & Hayes and dates to 1915. George Nathan and Ridley Hayes began their partnership in Birmingham in the late 1880s. They are particularly known for their good quality silver tableware, which they primarily assayed in Birmingham, and more personal items such as buckles, buttons and dressing table jars, which they mostly assayed in Chester. They remained in business up until around 1920.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no significant loss to the gilding and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 110 years of good service. The hinge is in good working order and the lid closes securely. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The box is 9.2cm / 3.6ins long, 3.7cm / 1.4ins wide and 2cm / 0.79ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 51.9g / 1.8oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the inside rim of the body, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter q for 1915 and the G.N over R.H makers' mark for George Nathan & Ridley Hayes.
