Description

Here we have a handsome George III Sterling Silver Quarter Pint Tankard or Mug. The tankard is circular with a body that tapers slightly inwards. It has two bands of line decoration and a flat topped curving handle. The initials J S R are elegantly engraved on the front.

The tankard was made in London by William Bateman Snr and dates to 1816. The Bateman Family dominated silver production in London during the late 18th and early 19th centuries, particularly in flatware. The business was driven by Hester Bateman who after being widowed in 1760 turned her husband’s insignificant silver firm into a hugely successful company. She was succeeded by her sons Peter and Jonathan in 1790 but Jonathan died soon after and his widow Ann took over his partnership with Peter. They were later joined by Ann’s son William who eventually took over the firm and was finally followed by his son William Jr.

Condition is good, with just one tiny ding in the base and a very small split in the top rim next to the handle. It remains perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tankard has a capacity of 1/4 pint / 142ml. It is 7.9cm / 3.1ins from rim to handle, 5.8cm / 2.3ins in diameter across the base and stands 6.3cm / 2.5ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 87.4g / 3.08oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, just below the top rim, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter a for 1816, the George III duty mark and the distinctive W.B makers' mark for William Bateman Snr.

Shipping in the UK is £12.50 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the tankard.
