Description

This is an elegant George V Sterling Silver Dwarf Candlestick. It has a circular base, weighted for stability, with a beaded upper rim and a bakelite lining. The urn shaped sconce has a matching beaded rim. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The candlestick was made in Birmingham by Fergenbaum & Son and dates to 1924. Fergenbaum & Son registered their mark at the Birmingham assay office in 1920. They were a short lived firm and little is known about them. The company was active only during the 1920s and primarily produced candlesticks, smoking accessories and tableware.

Condition is good with just a few little knocks around the bottom rim plus the superficial surface wear that you would expect after 100 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The dwarf candlestick is nicely proportioned being 5.5cm / 2.1ins high and 5.5cm / 2.1ins in diameter across the base. It weighs 77.5g / 2.7oz but this does of course include the weighting material in the base.

The hallmarks, low down on the base, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter z for 1924 and the F & S in concentric circles makers' mark for Fergenbaum & Son.
