Victorian 1 Pint Pewter Pub Jug, c.1860s/70s

Description
This is a 19th century pewter pub jug. It is a 1 pint size. These pub jugs were certified to prove they held the stated amount and thereby make sure that customers weren't short changed. The common practice was for the jugs to be marked to show which pub they belonged to and this one is inscribed. It's a little tricky to make out at first but with the help of some research we can work out that it says "M. Deacon, Prince Arthur, Ealing." Mary Deacon, along with her husband Thomas, were the landlady and landlord of the Prince Arthur pub in Ealing in the 1860s and early 1870s, so we can confidently date the jug to this period.
As you would expect of a pewter jug that has had a working life in a Victorian pub, this pub jug has a few dings and dents. However the overall condition is good and most importantly it remains watertight. It is lovely to hold the handle and feel where many thumbs have rubbed smooth the pewter. It gives a real connection to the history of the piece.
The jug stands 11cm / 4.25" tall and is 9.7cm / 3.8" in diameter across the base. It weighs 550g / 19.4oz.
The jug is stamped "PINT" to one side of the handle with the certification mark on the other side.
The Prince Arthur pub in Uxbridge Road, Ealing still exists but the current building dates to a rebuild in 1919, some fifty years after Mr & Mrs Deacon were handling this pewter jug.
