Description

This is a good quality Victorian Irish Sterling Silver Mustard Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoon has a crest of a Wyvern engraved at the top of the stem, which is used by the Croker family of Ireland.

The mustard spoon was made in Dublin by Christopher Cummins Jnr and dates to 1870. Christoper Cummins Snr registered his mark at the Dublin assay office in 1817. He was a specialist spoon maker. Christopher Cummins Jnr appears to have taken over the business somewhere around 1830, operating from premises in Great Ship Street, and continuing to produce flatware into at least the early 1870s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 150 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 11.7cm / 4.6ins long and weighs in at a respectable 15.3g / 0.54oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the crowned harp for Irish Sterling Silver, the Hibernia assay mark for Dublin, the date letter z for 1870, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the C C makers' mark for Christopher Cummins Jnr.
