Description

This is an elegant, high quality Edwardian Sterling Silver Bonbon Dish. The dish has an oval base on four pierced bracket feet. The body is pierced with pillars and ovals and the broad rim has pierced scroll decoration, a solid scroll rim and four angel masks. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The bonbon dish was made in London by R.H. Halford & Sons and dates to 1903. R.H. Halford & Sons were upmarket manufacturers and retailers of silverware, jewellery, watches and clocks operating since 1903 from premises at No.41 Pall Mall. They briefly ceased trading in 1909 when Robert Halford retired but returned within a few months as a limited company and then remained in business until the late 1930s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the pierced sections and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The dish measures 14.2cm / 5.6ins by 9.8cm / 3.8ins and stands 4.6cm / 1.8ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 62.8g / 2.2oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the upper side of the base, are somewhat rubbed but can still be read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter h for 1903 and the R H & Sns in a shield makers' mark for R.H. Halford & Sons.
