Description

This is a fine quality, heavy Edwardian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring. The ring is circular and is engraved with a design of ivy leaves around a blank central cartouche. Ivy leaves were considered a symbol of steadfastness and fidelity and were often used on wedding and engagement gifts.

The napkin ring was made in Birmingham by silversmith Henry Bourne and dates to 1901. Henry Bourne established his firm in Birmingham in 1871 and operated from premises in Ludgate Hill. They produced a wide range of good quality silver tableware and flatware. After Henry retired around 1899, the business was continued by his son, also Henry, until around 1910.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The napkin ring is 4.5cm / 1.77ins in diameter and 3.2cm / 1.26ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 40.5g / 1.43oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the back of the napkin ring, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter b for 1901 and the H.B makers' mark for Henry Bourne.
