Description

This is an attractive late Victorian Sterling Silver Napkin Ring in the Aesthetic style. The circular ring is bowed and decorated with engraved ferns. The cartouche is engraved with the initials W J.

The napkin ring was made in London by silversmith Robert Stebbings and dates to 1892. Robert Stebbings registered his first mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1882. He principally produced tableware and flatware from premises in Myddleton Street in Clerkenwell, the traditional area for London’s silversmiths. He remained in business until around the start of the First World War in 1914.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate after over 130 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The napkin ring is 4.2cm / 1.6ins in diameter and 2.6cm / 1in deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 33.0g / 1.16oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the outside rear of the body, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver. the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter R for 1892 and the R S makers' mark for Robert Stebbings.
