Description

This is a top quality, large late Victorian Cut Crystal Dressing Table Pot with a Sterling Silver lid. The speherical pot is hobnail cut all around the body and star cut on the base. The deep domed silver lid has an embossed design of a female flower seller surrounded by scrolls and flowers. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The dressing table pot was made in London by William Comyns & Sons and dates to 1900, the last full year of Queen Victoria's long reign. William Comyns founded his firm in 1859, later being joined by his sons. They produced silverware of the highest quality, often in striking designs. The company passed through several generations of the Comyns family and finally ceased trading in the early 1990s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents in the silver lid, just one tiny chip on one of the hobnail cuts in the crystal plus the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after 125 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pot stands 8.5cm / 3.3ins high and is 7.4cm / 2.9ins in diameter. The lid by itself weighs in at a very respectable 36.2g / 1.28oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together it weighs 286.8g / 10.12oz.

The hallmarks, on the side rim of the lid, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter e for 1900 and the W.C makers' mark for William Comyns & Sons.
