Description

This is a good quality William IV Irish Sterling Silver Mustard Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoon has a crest of a Wyvern engraved at the top of the stem, which is used by the Croker family of Ireland.

The mustard spoon was made in Dublin by Smith & Gamble and dates to 1831. Smith & Gamble were Dublin silversmiths who were active from the late 18th century. Their mark is most frequently seen on flatware and decanter labels but they also produced some good quality tea sets. They seem to have ceased trading around the late 1830s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 190 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 10.5cm / 4.1ins long and weighs in at a respectable 10.3g / 0.36oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the crowned harp for Irish Sterling Silver, the Hibernia assay mark for Dublin, the date letter L for 1831, the William IV duty mark and the S & G makers' mark for Smith & Gamble.
