Edwardian Silver Coin Purse, Sydney & Co, 1909

1 of 6
Description
This is an exquisite small Edwardian Sterling Silver Coin Purse. The purse is in the classic money pouch shape with flower and scroll engraving around the body and a blank shield shaped cartouche. It is suspended on a short chain and finger ring. The green silk interior has three compartments, which would each take a gold sovereign for an Edwardian lady heading out for the evening. The purse was made in Birmingham by silversmiths Sydney & Co and dates to 1909. Sydney & Co was founded by Judah, Albert & Lionel Ahronsberg in around 1900 at premises in Powell Street in Birmingham. They produced an extensive range of small silverware for personal and domestic use and also made a range of trophy cups. The firm was very successful and remained in business until around the mid 1970s.
Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents, no damage to the silk interior and just the superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 115 years of good service. The clasp and hinge are in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The coin purse is 9.5cm / 3.7ins from the finger ring to the hinge, 4.4cm / 1.7ins across the body and 1cm / 0.39ins deep. It weighs in at 16.0g / 0.56oz.
The hallmarks, just above the cartouche, are slightly rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter k for 1909 and the S & Co makers' mark for Sydney & Co.
