Description

This is a smart Mid-Century Sterling Silver Tea Strainer with Turned Wood Handle. The circular strainer has star and pinpoint piercings and a fleur-de-lys finial to rest on the rim of the cup. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The tea strainer was made in Birmingham by highly regarded silversmiths Adie Brothers Ltd and dates to 1953, the year of Queen Elizabeth II's coronation. The firm was founded in 1906 when two established Birmingham silversmiths, McKewan & Adie and E.S. Barnsley & Co, were merged under the leadership of Percy Adie to form Adie Brothers Ltd. The company was very successful and produced a wide range of silverware until the 1960s when they were absorbed into British Silverware.

Condition is good, with no splits in the wood, just a couple of shallow flat spots in the bowl and the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tea strainer is 16.5cm / 6.5ins long, 6cm / 2.3ins across the bowl and 1.9cm / 0.75ins deep. It weighs 35.2g / 1.24oz.

The hallmarks, on the outside of the bowl, are nice and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter D for 1953, the Elizabeth II Coronation mark and the distinctive A Bros Ltd makers' mark for Adie Brothers Ltd.
