Description

This is a good quality Victorian Maltese 917 Silver Salt Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoon has a gilt bowl and a crest of a man with a club on top of a tree. We haven't been able to identify this and it may be the armorial of a Maltese family.

The salt spoon was made in Valletta by silversmith Paolo Pace and dates to 1867. Paolo Pace established his business in Valletta, the capital of Malta, in 1855. His mark is most commonly seen on flatware but he was an exhibitor at the Paris exhibition in 1867 as a producer of gold and silver filigree ornaments.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, no loss to the gilding and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 155 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The salt spoon is 10.4cm / 4.1ins long and weighs in at a respectable 13.3g / 0.47oz of solid silver.

The hallmarks on the underside of the stem are a little rubbed but still okay to read. They show the Maltese cross in a circle for 11 Deniers (11/12ths) silver, which equates to 917/1000 grade purity, the date code 11 for 1867 and the PACE makers' mark for Paolo Pace. This is partially obscured by a second makers' mark with an E which we have not been able to identify.
