Description

This is a lovely Art Nouveau 800 Silver Mesh Coin Purse. The purse has two compartments in the mesh bag, which hang from a solid frame decorated with thistles in the Art Nouveau style. There is a ball clasp at the top in the centre and a small ring for attaching the purse to a chain or chatelaine.

The coin purse was made in France, which was generally considered to make the finest quality mesh purses and bags, and dates to the Art Nouveau period between around 1890 and 1910. There is no makers' mark that we can find.

Condition is good, with no dings or dents in the frame, just a minor catch in the mesh on one side and a small gap below the frame at one end. It remains perfectly usable if so desired. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The purse measures 7.5cm / 2.9ins across the top of the frame and 7.5cm / 2.9ins from the clasp to the bottom of the bag. It weighs in at a very respectable 50.9g / 1.79oz of solid silver.

The side of the frame has a very small boar's head stamp on either side of one end, which is the French mark for small items made of 800/1000 grade silver.
