Description

This is a good quality Irish Sterling Silver Mustard Spoon in the traditional Fiddle pattern. The spoon has a crest of a Wyvern engraved at the top of the stem, which is used by the Croker family of Ireland.

The mustard spoon was made in Dublin by John Smyth and dates to 1873. John Smyth established his firm in Dublin in 1827. They principally produced flatware and tea services along with a few other items of tableware and in later years some ecclesiastical silver. The company became John Smyth & Sons around 1876 and remained in business into at least the 1940s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expact after over 150 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The spoon is 11.8cm / 4.6ins long and weighs in at a respectable 12.5g / 0.44oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stem, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the crowned harp for Irish Sterling Silver, the Hibernia assay mark for Dublin, the date letter C for 1873, the Queen Victoria duty mark and the J.S makers' mark for John Smyth.
