Edwardian Silver Pen Tray, W. Neale, Chester, 1901

1 of 6
Description
This is a beautifully decorated Edwardian Sterling Silver Pen Tray. The pen tray is oblong with rounded ends. It is embossed with roses, daisies and other flowers on a textured background. The large central cartouche is blank. The pen tray was made by William Neale & Son and assayed in Chester in 1901. The firm was founded by William Neale in Birmingham in 1862, becoming William Neale & Son in 1890. They produced a very wide range of silverware from trophies to tea services and cigarette boxes to pencils and were highly successful. They remained in business into the mid 1960s.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just a very shallow crease in the cartouche plus the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The pen tray measures 22.4cm / 8.8ins long by 7.2cm / 2.8ins wide and is 0.9cm / 0.35ins deep. It weighs in at a very respectable 48.9g / 1.72oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the upper side of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter A for 1901 and the W.N makers' mark for William Neale & Sons.
