George V Cut Glass Vase with Silver Rim, B'ham, 1921

1 of 6
Description
This is a tall and elegant George V Cut Glass Vase with a Sterling Silver Rim. The vase is cylindrical with a tapered waist. The body is adorned with three panels of deeply incised tooth and star cut decoration and the underside of the base is star cut. The silver rim is plain. The vase was made in Birmingham by the renowned firm of John Grinsell & Sons and dates to 1921. Originally established in Birmingham in 1864 as Grinsell & Bourne, John Grinsell left the partnership and set up in business with his four sons in 1871 as John Grinsell & Sons. The new firm was quickly successful and opened showrooms in the City of London and in Glasgow. They specialised in silver mounted glassware and ceramics and remained in business until the 1950s when they were taken over by Barker-Ellis.
Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass and just a few tiny dings in the silver rim plus the overall superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 100 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The vase stands 21.6cm / 8.5ins high and is 7cm / 2.75ins in diameter at the base. It weighs 298.1g / 10.5oz.
The hallmarks on the rim are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter w for 1921 and the J.G & S makers' mark for John Grinsell & Sons.
