Description

This is an attractive Vintage Sterling Silver Backed Hairbrush. The silver back and handle of the brush are extensively decorated in the folklore style with embossed images of the Green Man, Herne the Hunter, birds, flowers and scrolling foliage. The letter M is elegantly engraved in the cartouche on the back of the brush.

The hairbrush was made in Birmingham by Broadway & Co and dates to 1976. Broadway & Co was founded by William Benjamin Broadway in Birmingham in 1901. The firm quickly established a reputation for good quality workmanship and produced a wide range of silverware for personal and domestic use. The company, now called Broadway Silversmiths, remains under the control of the Broadway family to this day and still uses many of the original dies and tools from the early years of the company.

Condition is very good, with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The nylon bristles are well fixed into their wooden base and the brush is perfectly usable. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The hairbrush is 22cm / 8.7ins long, 7.1cm / 2.8ins across and 4.3cm / 1.7ins high. It weighs 175.8g / 6.2oz.

The hallmarks, on the underside of the handle next to the brush head, are a little rubbed but still clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter B for 1976 and the B & Co makers' mark for Broadway & Co.
