Victorian Pewter Lidded Tankard, W.H, c.1850s-80s

Description
Here we have a fine example of a Victorian Pewter 1 Pint Lidded Tankard. The tankard is of the classic bulbous shape with a hinged circular lid, a design popularly known as a Tappit Hen in Britain, particularly in Scotland. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind. The tankard has a set of touchmarks on the underside of the saucer showing W H in a shield, a bird of prey, a shield with three stars across the centre and a lion's face. These may be the marks of W Harrison & Co of Sheffield but we cannot say for certain. Above these is the crowned rose surrounded by ferns which was the symbol used for top quality pewter in the 19th century.
Condition is very good, with no dings or dents, a nice patina and just the superficial surface wear that you would anticipate with use and the passage of time. The hinged lid is in good working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.
The tankard comfortably holds a pint of beer with plenty of room for a foaming head if that is your preference. It is 12.5cm / 4.9ins from rim to handle, 10cm / 3.9ins in diameter at its widest point and stands 18.4cm / 7.2ins high to the top of the thumb rest. It weighs in at 714g / 25.2oz.
