Description

This is a fine quality Graduated Set of Seven 19th Century Pewter Measures. The measures are in the traditional bulbous shape with broad scroll handles. Each measure is stamped on the front with its capacity: Quart, Pint, 1/2 Pint, 1 Gill, 1/2 Gill, 1/3 Gill & 1/4 Gill.

These measures would have been used in a Victorian pub to measure out beer and spirits from barrels behind the bar.

As is often the case with 19th century pewter, there is no makers' mark so we can't say who manufactured them but they are British and date to the period c.1850s-80s.

Although the measures have clearly been used, condition is very good with just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. They all have a slight sheen and a good patina. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The measures range in size from the Quart, which is 15.5cm / 6.1ins high and 11.8cm / 4.6ins in diameter, down to the 1/4 Gill, which is 5.2cm / 2ins high and 4.2cm / 1.6ins in diameter. The set of seven together weighs in at a hefty 2kg / 70.7oz.
