Here we have a good quality late Victorian Sterling Silver Mounted Glass Hip Flask with a Sterling Silver Drinking Cup.The glass flask is a rounded oblong with a bayonet fitting silver cap. The silver drinking cup slides off the bottom of the flask and has a gilded interior. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The hip flask was made in London by famous silversmiths William Hutton & Sons and dates to 1897. William Hutton established the firm in Birmingham in 1800 but in 1832 he transferred the entire business to Sheffield. Several generations of the Hutton family followed in the business and additional manufacturing was set up in London and back in Birmingham as well as a showroom in London’s Holborn district. The firm got into difficulty in the late 1920s, as so many did, and was taken over by James Dixon & Sons in 1930.

Condition is very good, with no chips or cracks in the glass, no dings or dents in the silver and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 125 years of good service, much of it probably spent outdoors in a pocket! Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The hip flask is 12.5cm / 4.9ins high, 6.1cm / 2.4ins across and 2.2cm / 0.87ins deep. The cup by itself weighs in at a respectable 46.4g / 1.6oz of solid Sterling Silver and all together the hip flask weighs 184.3g / 6.5oz.

The hallmarks, on the outside of the cup, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter b for 1897 and the distinctive W H & Ss Ld makers' mark for William Hutton & Sons Ltd. There are additional marks on the collar and lid of the cap.
