Description

Here we have a charming Early 20th Century Chinese 900 Silver Pepper Shaker in the form of a Pagoda. The pepper shaker has a hexagonal base supporting the four tier pagoda which is topped with a hexagonal shaker dome and a conical finial. There is a screw stopper in the base for refilling the shaker.

The pepper shaker was made in Hong Kong by Wang Hing & Co and dates to around the 1920s/30s. One of the greatest names in Chinese export silverware, Wang Hing & Co were founded around 1850 when China began to trade on a more defined basis with the European nations. Wang Hing was the trading name of the Lo family and they started the business in Canton, moving in the 1920s to Hong Kong and opening a store in Shanghai. The firm ceased trading in 1941 as a result of the Japanese occupation during World War Two.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect with use and the passage of time. The screw stopper is nice and secure. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The pepper shaker stands 7.5cm / 2.9ins high and is 3.6cm / 1.4ins across the base. It weighs in at a respectable 30.8g / 1.08oz of soild silver.

The marks, on the underside of the base, are well struck and clear to read. They show the 90 mark for minimum 900/1000 grade silver and the W H makers' mark for Wang Hing & Co.
