Description

This is an attractive pair of George III Sterling Silver Sugar Tongs in the Old English Bright Cut pattern. The top of each arm is decorated with a trailing flower spray below which is a long straight line of engraved zigzags. The backs of the bowls have pinprick engraving. There are no initials or personalisation of any kind.

The sugar tongs were made in London by silversmiths Duncan Urquhart and Naphtali Hart and date to 1793. The business was established in London by Daniel Urquhart & Naphtali Hart in 1791 and their partnership lasted for 20 years. In 1812, probably after Urquhart’s death or retirement, Naphtali Hart continued on his own for another 20 years or so before being joined by his son John Naphtali Hart in the 1830s.

Condition is very good, with no dings or dents and just the superficial surface wear that has to be anticipated after over 230 years of good service. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The tongs are 13.7cm / 5.4ins long and weigh in at a respectable 28.1g / 0.99oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks are split between the two arms and are nice and clear to read. On the inside of one arm are the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the London date letter s for 1793 and the George III duty mark. Inside the other arm is the D.U over N.H makers' mark for Duncan Urquhart and Naphtali Hart.
