Description

This is a charming Edwardian Sterling Silver Trinket Dish. The dish has a broad heart shaped base, lattice pierced sides and scrolling flowers and foliage decoration. The central cartouche is blank.

The trinket dish was made in Birmingham by silversmith Henry Matthews and dates to 1905. Henry Matthews registered his mark in 1893 and ran his firm from premises in Vittoria Street in Birmingham's famous Jewellery Quarter. He made a very wide range of good quality silverware and remained in business up until around 1930.

Condition is very good, with no dings, dents or damage and just the superficial surface wear that you would expect after over 115 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The dish is 10.2cm / 4ins wide, 7.5cm / 2.9ins deep and stands 1.6cm / 0.63ins high. It weighs in at 19.3g / 0.68oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the rim above the cartouche, are a little rubbed but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the anchor assay mark for Birmingham, the date letter f for 1905 and the H M makers' mark for Henry Matthews.
