Description

This is a good quality decorative Pair of Edwardian Sterling Silver Serving Spoons. The bowls have scalloped rims and an embossed pattern of fruits. The stems are elaborately engraved with flowers against a textured background and the cartouche at the top of each stem is elegantly engraved with a letter L.

The spoons were made in Sheffield by well known silversmiths James Deakin & Sons and date to 1901. James Deakin founded the firm in 1866 and by 1878 and had been joined by his son William as partner, with two further sons joining in the 1880s. The company was very successful with manufacturing in Sheffield and showrooms in London, Glasgow and Belfast. In 1935 they were involved in an ill-fated merger which led to the company's collapse within a couple of years.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 120 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

Each spoon is 22cm / 8.6ins long and 4.9cm / 1.9ins across the bowl. The pair together weigh in at a substantial 127.7g / 4.5oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the undersides of the stems, are well struck and clear to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crown assay mark for Sheffield, the date letter i for 1901 and the J D over W D makers' mark for John & William Deakin of James Deakin & Sons.
