Description
He we have a fine quality George II Sterling Silver Cream Jug. The beautiful jug is pear shaped with embossed bird, scroll and flower decoration around the body, which stands on three shell and pad feet. The top of the handle has leaf decoration and there is a wavy top rim. The central cartouche on the front is elegantly engraved with the letters E B.The cream jug was made in London by silversmith William Gwillim and dates to 1752. William Gwillim registered his mark at Goldsmith’s Hall in London in 1740 and married Mary Goodchild in 1745, in which year he was at premises in Carey Lane near St Paul’s Cathedral. He made a range of good quality silverware and remained in business until at least the mid-1850s and possibly later.
Condition is very good with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 270 years of good service. One front leg is a little out of line with the other two but it still stands securely without rocking. Please make sure to view all of the photographs.
The cream jug is 8.4cm / 3.3ins from lip to handle, 5.4cm / 2.1ins across the body and stands 10cm / 3.9ins high. It weighs in at a very respectable 77.3g / 2.73oz of solid Sterling Silver.
The hallmarks, on the underside of the body, are a little rubbed, as you would expect, but still easy to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the crowned leopard's head assay mark for London, the date letter r for 1752 and the W G makers' mark for William Gwillim.
Shipping in the UK is £11 by Royal Mail Special Delivery, which includes cover for the value of the cream jug.
