Description

This is an attractive Mid-Century Portuguese 833 Grade Silver Handled three piece Christening Set in its original case. The set consists of a knife, fork and spoon all of which have steel uppers and 833 silver handles. The uppers are plain whilst the handles are pointed with gadroon, bead and ribbed decoration in a typically Iberian style.

The set was made in the northern Portuguese city of Porto and dates to around the 1950s / 1960s. There is a makers' mark on each piece but it is very small and we have been unable to identify it.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and very little surface wear. It seems likely that this set has always been kept as a treasured gift rather than seeing any regular use. The box is slightly stained on the outside but in overall good condition with both the clasp and hinges in full working order. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The knife is 17.3cm / 6.8ins long, the fork is 15.9cm / 6.2ins long and the spoon is 16.1cm / 6.3ins long. The set of three together, unboxed, weighs in at 71.9g / 2.5oz which is of course a mixture of silver and steel.

Each item is marked just below the collar with the eagle's head in an octagon, indicating Porto, above the number .833, showing that they are in 833/1000 grade silver. As mentioned above there is also a makers' mark which sadly we have been unable to identify.
