Buchanan and Laing (Prima Finds)

Description

An early 19th century, French, ebonised and ormolu mounted double sided pen and ink stand complete with drawer. This may date to the earlier part of the 19th century, its decoration with laurel leaf and flowerhead rosette on the ends is reminiscent of the early years of the 19th century. It is a mahogany construction which has been ebonised. The stringing is gilt brass, the florette decor is typical French ormolu. The original ink bottles have screw tops, they are of turned bone mounted with elaborate cast decorative ormolu discs. The pounce pot has a brass top which has worn gilding.

This is an unusual piece, it would seem to be designed for use from either side, we speculate where this was used on a 'managers' desk, offering visitors the opportunity to apply signatures to offered papers from the visiting side of the table.

Condition is good, it hasn't been restored, lightly cleaned only. The glass is all in good order, the tops all screw on and off well, a slight crack in the side of one top, probably from age shrinkage. The pounce as mentioned has lost its gilding. The structure is fine, drawer slides well and there is no damage or repairs. The photos are pretty good at showing the condition.
