Description

A true statement piece of mid 20th century crystal glassware. Based on a Georgian pedestal bowl of thistle form, these are often described as punch bowls, we don't think this one was ever intended for serving punch. It is a piece for display on a side/console table, maybe the centre of a dining table.

A super, clear crystal with an unusual cut, the scallop cut rim tops a band of four panels each cut with a thistle and leaves motif. It is most unusual, one expects the more common wheel engraving, this is a deep cut design, the leaves all cut as deep 'v', the bulb and the flower head are first concave round/oval cuts that have been, in the case of the bulb further cross cut, the flower head remains plain then has the addition of vertical cuts on and above its top edge to depict the flower. Each panel is separated with a vertical 'ladder' form interspersed with eight point stars. The latter band is terminated at the waist and the bulbous bowl is then all over, large size, cross cut. The stem is plain with stacked squashed ball form, finishing with a star cut plain curved foot.

Size: this is large and heavy, it stands 10 inches high and has a diameter of 10 inches.

Condition: Excellent, no dulling of the glass, the cut is superb and the underside of the foot has minimal signs of age .
