Description

A fine example of Victorian (circa 1875) cabochon set brass pedestal inkwell, of the aesthetic movement . The form is of a classical double handed pedestal urn and cover. The central column being fixed and mounted to a circular shallow dish, decorated with six garnet cabochons set as with jewels in a round bezel, many cabochon set pieces of period metal-ware are left plain, however in this case the dish is superbly engraved with aesthetic style motif, the design repeating on the body of the inkwell. It is in the heraldic style, a crown and shaped shield with a cabochon (boss) to the centre. It is unusual and possible significant, but the story has been lost in time.

The hinged lid reveals the integral inkwell compartment into which is removable cylindrical frosted glass inkwell with a brass collar.

Date: late 19th Century.

Condition. Excellent both in appearance and functionality. The lid fits precisely, there is no damage to any part and the glass liner is as original, including the connection to the brass collar. All the mounts are secure and nothing is loose. The brass has been cleaned, it has been done manually and without any use of abrasives, the patina on the underside has been left.
