Buchanan and Laing (Prima Finds)

Description

A magnificent, top quality, hand made, large hammered and riveted heavy gauge, two handle, copper serving tray. This is a rectangular flared and rolled edge tray with pinched corners and riveted solid copper handles. The tray is 19 inches long with extra for corner protrusion and handle extension, the width is 13 3/4 inches. It probably is contemporary with the work of John Pearson, (London and Newlyn) putting the date to the early years of the 20th century. (circa 1910)

This is one of the best period trays we have been fortunate enough to discover. The standard and quality of the metal work is first class, all exactingly applied by hand and no repousse work involved. It is simple yet beautiful in its simplicity, the consistent all over hammered /planished finish , the border of dimples, the exacting roll over top edge, and corner pinches all add up to a first class piece of design and craftsmanship. There is the trade mark stamp to the underside 'OLBURY' HAND BEATEN ENGLISH MADE.

The handles are from solid copper round bar, bent and with flattened ends through which they are riveted to the body of the tray. This is a heavy tray (1.647 kg), the quality would be slightly lost if it were of a lighter gauge.

Despite being a good hundred plus years old, this is in excellent condition and the photos honestly reflect the condition, it has been cleaned, no mechanical polishing undertaken, its been left honest.
