Description

Mazzarina desk in walnut briar with threads to form polylobed frames that decorate the front, the sides and the top.

The under-top band includes a large central drawer with a small door underneath that can be opened with a bronze knob, all framed by three smaller side drawers.

The wavy front is divided into three bands framed at the corners by volutes of leaves in inlaid wood.

Eight obelisk-shaped legs in threaded wood are joined by crossed crosspieces.

The entire system is inlaid with a floral motif with maple wood.

Historical notes: The name of this type of furniture derives from the surname of the prime minister of Louis XIV, the powerful Cardinal Giulio Mazarin, who succeeded Richelieu to the office on his death in 1642. It is a type of furniture born during the seventeenth century in France to then establish itself in the rest of Europe, always faithful to the same design.

Provenance: Piedmont late 19th century.
