Description

An absolutely MAGNIFICENT large SILVER PLATE CENTREPIECE signed "FAGEL".

Standing an impressive 500mm (~20 inches) tall, this stunning sculpture depicts a fisherman hauling in his net amidst a multitude of finely executed marine detail including a boat under sail, lighthouse, anchor, barrel, stylised breaking waves and seaweed, plus a number of fish including a sturgeon, gurnard, ray, lobster and several others.

The detail is superb...an additional 8 photos are available on request with additional close-up detail.

The heavily plated silver base supports a stylish green glass trumpet vase.

The signature "FAGEL" is attributed to Léon Fagel (1851–1913) a renowned French sculptor, best known for his finely executed figures, busts and statues (many examples on Google Images). This piece may well have been a special commission.

Fagel was born in Valenciennes, France. He won the second Prix de Rome in 1875, and the Prix de Rome in 1879. He exhibited busts of Chevreul, J. Cavelier, and Le Greffeur at the Exposition Universelle (1900), along with two large reliefs for Sacré-Cœur (Faith and Fortitude).

This lovely old centrepiece is in excellent condition.

Height ~ 500mm, Width ~ 275mm
