DescriptionSpectacular ebony veneered/ ebonised brass inlaid Regency bracket clock with “Egyptian” influence design features, brass corinthian columns, pierced brass side frets, eagle ball finial, and ring side handles.A spirit level is incorporated in the front of the case and level is achieved by screw adjustment of the four brass ball feet. PLEASE NOTE THAT THESE PHOTOGRAPHS SHOW THE CLOCK IN AN (AS YET) UNRESTORED CONDITION.
Dial: The 8” shallow convex fire enamel dial has the unusual feature of a fast/slow regulation (rise and fall) under the 12 o’clock position.
The dial is signed – Josiah Bartholemew, Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell. The cast brass bezel is finely engine turned and supports a shallow convex glass. The hands are of finely pierced brass and the rise and fall pointer is of blued steel.
Movement: High quality twin fusee 5 pillar 8 day movement with hourly rack striking and pull hour repeat.The rise and fall mechanism is superbly executed, the backplate is edge engraved in the style of the period, and the pendulum engraved to match.Josiah Bartholemew,Clerkenwell, London, is Beautifully engraved on the backplate. Maker: Josiah Batholemew, worked at 25, Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell, (London).
Maker: Josiah Batholemew, worked at 25, Red Lion Street, Clerkenwell, (London) 1799 – 1842 and was greatly respected in the early 19C Horological Trade.He was called as a witness before the Parliamentary Select Committee during the enquiry into the depressed state of the Watch Trade in 1817. He is known to have supplied watches to the Turkish Market, one of which is exhibited in the British Museum. Clerkenwell was at this time, and for many years after, a centre of horological excellence for this type of clock, examples of which were exported to the “Great and the Good” worldwide.
