Description

A fine pair of high level elizabethan carved oak doors.

Exeter circa 1570

Carved with angels and virtues, central cartouches one with two female heads and breasts exposed,a mermaid ,a saint ,a wonderful west country beast with moobs and a bird like grotesque all above a wide strapwork base panel.

The design of these doors is typical of the exeter region ,a design that owes so much to the ornament prints of Van Vredeman DeFries book of design.

Also there are similar motifs to a large survivng suite of extravagantly ornamented paneling recovered from a house in the centre of Exeter in 1856 now in the Victoria and Albert museum

Good colour and patina, one is slightly lighter and has a replaced side stile and there are two small patch repairs from the back.
