William Mellor 1851-1931 Oil Wooded Landscape
We are delighted to offer for sale this beautifully executed landscape oil by the renowned artist William Mellor, who has signed the painting in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts a summer landscape, with the trees in full leaf and the strong summer sun shafting strongly through the trees in the background, while the foreground is in relative shadow, a contrast frequently displayed by the artist. There is a small stream or river gushing over rocks and settling into a small pool in the foreground. This painting shows off the delicate and detailed foliage work for which the artist is well known, as well as the inclusion of rivers and waterfalls, which are present in a majority of his paintings.
William Mellor was born in Barnsley in 1851, the son of Joseph Mellor (1827-1888) and his wife Mary. Although both families of his parents were in the weaving industry, Joseph turned to painting himself about 1850 and is also a listed artist. It is believed that he taught William to paint and, although until he reached the age of 30, William also worked in weaving, being a loom turner. In 1881, he decided to become a landscape painter and moved his family around the country, possibly to undertake commissions, and lived variously in London, Scarborough, Manchester and Southport, before settling at 78 Dragon Road, Harrogate, Yorkshire, where he died in 1931.
He married his wife Mary Elizabeth Watson from Leeds in 1876 and two of their children became artists, the eldest Everett Watson Mellor (1878-1965) and Leonard H. Mellor.
William's subject included locations in Yorkshire, North Wales, Cumbria, Northumberland and the Scottish Borders. Unfortunately, as the canvas of this painting has been laid to board in the past, we do not know the location.
The painting is framed in an ornate gilt frame and slip and will be supplied wired and ready to hang.
Image size: 23 5/8" x 15 1/2" - 60cm x 39.35cm
Frame size: 31 7/8" x 24" - 81cm x 61cm
Medium: Oils on canvas laid to board
Condition: Very good. There is no craquelure, damage or paint loss. The frame and slip are also in very good condition.
