William McGregor 19/20th C. Oil The Dales
We are pleased to offer for sale this very well executed and large oil on canvas by the artist WILLIAM MCGREGOR, who has signed the painting W. McGregor in the lower left hand corner. The painting is entitled 'Westdale' on an old framer's label on the stretcher. The painting depicts a view of 'Westdale' on a sunny day, with blustery clouds in the sky and a man, carrying a fishing rod, crossing the bridge over the river. We have done a search to find out where Westdale is, but without success. We surmise that it may be in the Yorkshire Dales, but we would be grateful for confirmation of this.
William McGregor was a Scottish artist in the late 19th/early 20th century. We have found very little biographical information about him in our reference books, although there is a William F. MacGregor who lived in Edinburgh and exhibited in the early 1920s, who may be him, although we cannot find any auction listings for him and his name is spelt slightly differently. Another problem we have had is that most of the auction sites confuse William McGregor with William Yorke MacGregor and show his paintings under this name, although it is obvious from the work that they are totally different and William Yorke MacGregor signed W. Y. MacGregor.
The painting is framed in a 2 1/2" gilt frame and is ready to hang.
