Signed in pencil lower right and dated 1925 with the title 'Highland Fantasia' also inscribed in pencil, lower left.

Painter, typographer, sculptor teacher and writer, McCance was born in Cambuslang, near Glasgow. He studied at Glasgow School of Art, and spent most of World War 1 imprisoned as a conscientious objector. In the early 1920s he carried out abstract works with a strong cubist influence, as can be seen in this example. He married Agnes Miller Parker and, between them, they designed and illustrated many fine books.
Preserved on the back of the frame is a letter to a friend, 'Philip' from McCance, which is signed and dated 1969 from his address in Ayreshire, which reads as follows
This is a print from a lino-cut I did in the 'twenties', that I have come across in a drawer. I did it before I became a printer and had no press. I think I printed it by making the lino and rolling the paper on the back with a hand roller to get the impression on Jap tissue. Mac. PriceSOLD Dimensions6½ x 3½ ins (16 x 9 cm).
