Welsh Oak Longcase Clock.
Early 19th.c. oak longcase clock c.1800 with 8 day works by Watkin Owen of Llanwst, the best known Welsh antique clock maker of his age. Attractive case of particularly good colour, a little shorter than many antique clocks, standing a fraction under 81″ tall. Hood featuring swan neck pedement and reeded columns over a slim body with long shaped door and reeded quarter columns typical of Llanrwst cases of the period.
With a delightful 13″ square enamel face painted with strawberries (the first time we have come across these on a Llanrwst clock), signed Watkin Owen Llanrwst and featuring a working date display. The hands are later replacements.
Original works, featuring Watkin Owen’s trademark 5th pillar, cleaned and overhauled and sold together with a 12 month guarentee. Original weights and pendulum.
The Owen family of Llanrwst, a small market town in the Conwy valley, are probably the most prolific and best known family of 18th century clockmakers in Wales. Watkin Owen (1755-1809) was aged just 21 when his father, the respected clockmaker John Owen, died. After establishing himself as head of the business, he improved and refined his father’s works, adding a fifth pillar to the movement and producing a remarkable number of antique clocks of consistantly high quality and reliability housed in excellent regional cases. For more information about Watkin Owen you can’t beat the remarkable study of his output which makes up the bulk of Colin and Mary Brown’s book The Clockmakers of Llanrwst.
