Watercolour Portraits by George Richmond RA. Bethune Family Portraits Children %%alt5%% %%alt6%%
Probably the Son and Daughter of Sir Henry Lindsay-Bethune, 1st Bt., ca.1841
Watercolour, unsigned with white highlights on Whatman Turkey Mill paper, presented in a new rag board mount.

There are two portraits with the name Bethune recorded in George Richmond’s account books:

121. Bethune. Captain [“began” £13.2.6] 1848
122. Bethune. Miss and Little Boy [£25.4] 1841

The national Portrait Gallery in London have a photograph in their collection of a young woman, although older, bears a distinct likeness to the young girl in our picture catalogued as Miss Bethune, probably the daughter of Sir Henry Lindsay-Bethune, 1st Bt. ca.1860.

Major General Sir Henry Lindsay-Bethune (1787-1851) and his wife Couttes Lindsay-Bethune, formerly Trotter (1802-1877) had 3 sons and 5 daughters.

• Anne Catherine Bethune (1823–1903), married John Thomas Campbell
• Stewart (or Steuart) Lindsay Bethune (1825–1904), married Hector Graham-Toler, 3rd Earl of Norbury
• John Trotter Bethune, 10th Earl of Lindsay (1827–1894), married Jeanne Eudoxie Marie Duval
• Caroline Felicie Bethune (1828–1891), died unmarried
• Henry James Hamilton Bethune (1834–1862), d.s.p.
• Charlotte Jane Bethune (1835–1855), died unmarried
• Coutts (later Jane Coutts) Bethune (1839–1909), married James Stuart Trotter
• Martin William Bethune (1843–1859), died unmarried in Marseille

If the two children are from the family of Henry and Lady Lindsay-Bethune it would be reasonable to assume that in 1841 when the picture was painted the young boy would be Henry about 7 years, and the girl would be, Anne who would have been about 18.
