This is a charming late Victorian Sterling Silver Menu Holder in the form of a Lyre. The holder has a circular base with the lyre upright at the front and the vertical bar to hold the menu or place card behind it.

The menu holder was made by highly regarded silversmiths Saunders & Shepherd and assayed in Chester in 1899. Cornelius Saunders and Frank Shepherd began their partnership in London’s Holborn Circus district in 1878. This was a major centre for silversmiths, goldsmiths and jewellers for many years in the 19th and 20th centuries. The firm were both manufacturers and retailers, specialising in small silver items for personal or domestic use and registered marks in London, Birmingham, Chester and Sheffield. The company remained in business up until the late 1930s.

Condition is extremely good, with no dings or dents and just the minimal superficial surface wear that has to be expected after over 125 years of use. Please make sure to view all the photographs.

The menu holder is 3.7cm / 1.45ins high by 3.1cm / 1.22ins wide and the base ring is 2.7cm / 1.06ins in diameter. It weighs in at 9.2g / 0.32oz of solid Sterling Silver.

The hallmarks, on the back of the lyre, are somewhat rubbed but still okay to read. They show the lion passant for Sterling Silver, the sword and three wheatsheaves assay mark for Chester, the date letter Q for 1899 and the distinctive CS and FS either side of a star makers' mark for Saunders & Shepherd.
