Very Rare 18th Century French Pearwood Snuff Box
A VERY RARE CIRCULAR FRENCH PEARWOOD SNUFF BOX, the lid hand carved with the head and shoulders of Voltaire et J.J. Rousseau and with an intricate engine turned base. Made 1778.
NEW INFORMATION ADDED - THIS RARE PIECE IS REFERENCED IN CLARE CORBEILLER'S BOOK ON EUROPEAN AND AMERICAN SNUFF BOXES AND A SIMILAR SNUFF BOX OF THE SAME MATERIAL AND AGE IS HELD IN THE BRITISH MUSEUM.
Jean-Jacques Rousseau (28 June 1712 – 2 July 1778) was a Genevan philosopher, writer, and composer of the 18th-century. His political philosophy influenced the French Revolution as well as the overall development of modern political, sociological, and educational thought
François-Marie Arouet ( 21 November 1694 – 30 May 1778), known by his nom de plume Voltaire , was a French Enlightenment writer, historian and philosopher famous for his wit, his attacks on the established Catholic Church, and his advocacy of freedom of religion, freedom of expression, and separation of church and state. He was an outspoken advocate, and as a satirical polemicist, he frequently made use of his works to criticize intolerance, religious dogma, and the French institutions of his day.
It was well known at the time that Rosseau and Voltaire hated each other and publicly attacked each others views and beliefs.
