Very large Antique wall clock by J. Warden
A magnificent 8-day timepiece wall antique clock which dwarfs the standard-sized fusee dial antique clocks we have .
The 24" diameter black metal dial has a gold-painted crown motif above the makers's name, J. WARDEN FECIT. The gold Roman numerals and bold spade counter-balanced hands are proportionate to the clock's overall size and prominence. The same style of crown can be seen on other clocks of the Victorian era the Royal crest is usually applied to the dials of clocks made for Government contract.
The wide rosewood dial surround is flat, with the distinctive grain radiating out from the centre. A base door and hinged side access door give access to the pendulum. The dial / movement ensemble is attached to the backbox with four pegs.
The latched brass bezel is hinged to the right-hand side, and is fitted with flat glass.
The clock has a large 8-day fusee timepiece movement.
John S. Warden appears in the 1848 Whites Directory of Essex trade directory in the Watch Makers section at Market Place, Waltham Abbey. He is also listed in the 1855 Post Office dirctory of Essex, Kent and Middlesex.
Overall diameter 33 inches.
