Unusual Stained & Painted Glass Horse Panels RARE
A most unusual and beautiful pair of painted and stained glass panels or window lights.
These panels each feature an oval centrepiece with a painted design in red and depicting the horse breeds of 'CLEVELAND' and 'PERCHERON'. The ovals are set within an 'olive wreath' type design and a broader geometric network of traditional stained and leaded glass.
The quality of the painting is very good indeed, with the horses rendered with an observed / objective accuracy.
The Cleveland example is, curiously, set against a somewhat neoclassical backdrop, whilst the Percheron example is seen standing within a stable.
The Cleveland Bay is a breed of horse that originated in England during the 17th century, named after its colouring and the Cleveland district of Yorkshire......whilst the Percheron is a breed of draft horse that originated in the Huisne river valley in western France, part of the former Perche province (from which the breed takes its name).
The painted ovals probably date from around the late 18th Century and through into the Regency period, whilst the stained glass that surrounds them being later and perhaps mid to late 19th century.
Each panel has been carefully mounted into a simple protective oak frame (contemporary) which also enables each to be hung against a window (or other source of light) and so providing a stunning illuminated feature for the home.
Dimensions:
Each panel, overall, including the frame, approx 37 cms x 61 cms.
Each panel, without frame: approx 33 cms x 56.5 cms.
The oval pieces to each panel (upon which the horses are painted) each measure approx: 20 cms x 28 cms.
These panels can be considered rare and are of both strong painted glass and equestrian interest.
