Thornton The Temple of Flora Hyacinths Print 1801
Sorry, this item is now sold. If you are seeking similar, feel free to contact me with your requirements. Thank you.
A magnificent, original, folio-sized, antique print from Robert Thornton's epic and celebrated 1799 - 1807 publication, 'The Temple of Flora'.
'The Temple of Flora' is the third and final part of Robert Thornton’s New Illustration of the Sexual System of Carolus von Linnaeus, and is now widely considered to be the greatest flower book ever produced.
It consisted of a series of sumptuous depictions of flowers notable for their epic and unusual settings. Interwoven amongst the images were various descriptions, histories and poetic odes regarding the flowers featured. The first plates were engraved by Thomas Medland in May 1798 from paintings by Philip Reinagle. Between 1798 and 1807 they produced a total of thirty-three coloured plates, engraved in aquatint, stipple and line.
Complete editions of the Temple rank among the greatest treasures held by only a few libraries and exchange hands only rarely, commanding considerable (six figure) sums of money.
Offered here is 'Hyacinths', a stipple engraved aquatint with hand finishing. This is an 1801 original and is not to be confused with a later copy or facsimile. This is a scarce print and one of the most enduring and sought after designs from 'The Temple of Flora'.
It is lettered below the image with title and production details "S.Edwards pinxt.", "Warner sculpt.", with a publication line reading, "London, Published June 1, 1801 by Dr. Thornton", as shown.
Dimensions -
Coloured image only, circa 35.7cms x 44.3cms.
Viewable area (mount aparture) circa 38.5cms x 51 cms.
Overall, including the frame - 65.5cms x 78.5cms.
The print has been recently framed and is presented in a hand-finished, acid-free mount.
Condition
For the avoidance of doubt, I will be very critical and say that the overall condition can be described as 'fair'.
Please call or email for a full condition report.
I have seen only a few copies of this print over the last 15 or 20 years. All have sold exceedingly well and auction results for this design frequently exceed the asking price here.
There is currently an example of this print available elsewhere online for $4,750.
Another fine example is held in the British Museum. It was added to their collection as far back as 1889.
A super and highly original gift for the flower or garden lover.
