Teresa Hegg RI 1829-1911 Watercolour Flower Piece
We are offering for sale this accomplished watercolour flower piece, by the well known Swiss artist Teresa Maria Hegg, who has signed the painting Teresa Hegg in capital letters in the lower right hand corner. The painting depicts two colour forms of Polygala Chamibuxus, growing beneath some young green fronds of bracken, with the brown stems of last year's growth still visible. The painting bears a label to the backing board with the name of the subject and the artist.
Polygala chamaebuxus, the shrubby milkwort, is an ornamental plant of genus Polygala in the family Polygalaceae. It has white flowers with bright yellow stigmatic lobes, and is native to the mountains of west-central Europe. It was known to be grown in cultivation in about 1658 and was illustrated by Carolus Clusius.
MadameTeresa Maria Hegg, nee de Landerset, was born in Fribourg in Switzerland on the 8th May 1829. She studied art in Gevena & Lyons. She travelled extensively in Europe, working in London, Vevey in Switzerland, Avignon, Nice and Cannes in France, where she died in 1911. She was a still life painter of flowers, primarily in watercolours. She exhibited from about 1872 at The Royal Society of Painters in Watercolours about 50 works and was elected a Full Member of that august institution in 1886. She also exhibited at the Society of Women Artists. Please note that she is sometimes listed as Maria Theresa or Teresa Hegg de Landerset, or any combination of these names.
Provenance: This watercolour was one of an exhibition of watercolours by Terea Maria Hegg R.I. held at Ashley Antiques, Long Melford in Suffolk between 2nd July and 9th July 1977, and the catalogue for this exhibition will be supplied along with the painting.
